TEC7115 - GIS Design and Use for ES Field Stations
Back to TEC Courses WLD Courses CLM Home Back to WLD Courses

Learn how to design and use a geographic information system (GIS) for a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Ecological Services (ES) field station.  This intermediate-level GIS course addresses design needs particular to a large-area, small-scale GIS covering a state-wide/multi-watershed region and how to apply that system directly to ES field office tasks.  Participants learn methods to develop GIS datasets and manage field station spatial data for multiple users, and learn how to apply GIS development to endangered species, contaminants, permit review, and other field station activities.  Instruction also includes an overview of GPS application and integration with a field station GIS and how a field office GIS can interact with the “TAILS” Tracking and Integrated Logging System.

College Credit None
Who Should Attend:

USFWS ES field station personnel who have basic knowledge of GIS and want to be more involved in expanded system development, management of data sets, and/or intermediate-level applications (such as modeling) of GIS to field station projects.  Completion of "GIS Introduction for Conservation Professionals" (TEC7112) is recommended, and a working experience with ArcGIS software is required.

Objectives:

*Discuss GIS design issues for large-area ES projects, including data acquisition, data management, coordinate systems,

metadata, and logging system integration;

*Learn how to collect basic location data from a GPS unit and incorporate that data into a GIS;

*Apply GIS software analysis techniques (including modeling) to ES field station projects.
