This training is designed to provide FWS and other field staff with a basic understanding of what early detection surveillance methods for Avian Influenza they may be involved in. The information here is from an ITV workshop held at NCTC on June 29, 2006. It was a joint workshop conducted by FWS, NPS, and the USGS.

  • Explain how H5N1 is expected to spread to North America and.s its potential impacts to wild birds;
  • Describe what the FWS is doing to properly prepare for and respond to the arrival of H5N1 in North America;
  • Explain why it is important to conduct early detection surveillance for H5N1;
  • List ways that FWS field staff may be involved in early detection surveillance;
  • List the steps that each field site should take to prepare based on their anticipated involvement;
  • List proper PPE to be worn when collecting samples during early detection surveillance;
  • Describe how to select and properly prepare a specimen for shipping to a diagnostic laboratory;
