Conservation Science Webinar Series CSP3900
"The Science behind the News"
The National Conservation Training Center's Conservation Science Webinar Series is designed to provide the science behind the most pressing conservation issues in the news. We attempt to cut through the spin and rhetoric by gathering the most up-to-date scientific information from the experts and communicating it to our employees in the field. The webinar format allows us to stay current while minimizing employee travel, reducing costs and reducing our carbon footprint.
The views, opinions, or positions expressed in this webinar series are those of the guest presenter and do not necessarily reflect the views, opinions, positions of the US Fish and Wildlife Service or NCTC.

Wetlands as sentinels and mitigators of climate change
Dr. Judith Z. Drexler, California Water Science Center, U.S. Geological Survey
Description: Wetlands are highly sensitive to changes in hydrology and can be used as sentinels for climate change.
Peat-forming wetlands are also important carbon sinks, which makes them valuable mitigators of carbon pollution. In this seminar, I will discuss research in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California in which I used fens (groundwater-fed peatlands) as gauges for long-term changes in groundwater recharge due to climate change. In addition, I will present a study in which I compared carbon storage rates in naturally tidal versus impounded freshwater marshes in South Carolina. The results from
this study show that management regime exerts a strong influence on carbon sequestration rates. Small changes in
management could improve carbon storage in wetlands throughout the National Wildlife Refuge system.
