Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge Virtual Exhibit
This five-page document is a reproduction of the original survey of Pelican Island which was performed in 1902. The survey was found in a collection of documents owned by long-time Service employee Phil DuMont. The survey was not filed upon completion, thus preventing the land from being homesteaded. This opened the way for its ultimate designation as the first unit in what was to become the National Wildlife Refuge System. It was designated as a federal wildlife sanctuary in 1903 by President Theodore Roosevelt.
