DescriptionA Schoolyard Habitat/Outdoor Classroom (SH/OC) Program is a coordinated effort between Service and conservation employees, schools, and community organizations that integrate Schoolyard Habitat/Outdoor Classroom best practices to install ecologically sound restoration projects that are sustainable outdoor learning areas. This course develops SH/OC technical consultants to assist schools at the local level in areas such as project design, plant selection, construction, maintenance, curriculum connections, student instruction, etc. This course supports the Service’s Connecting People with Nature priority.
At the conclusion of the training, participants will:
• Explain how partnering with schools and other partners to build schoolyard habitats/outdoor classrooms meet the Service’s mission;
• Identify potential projects that may be successful schoolyard habitats/outdoor classrooms;
• List steps for working with schools to complete a schoolyard habitat/outdoor classroom project;
• Explain the benefits of student and school-team directed schoolyard habitat/outdoor classroom projects for ownership and sustainability;
• Describe how schoolyard habitats/outdoor classrooms support national curriculum and educational standards; and
• List options/opportunities that could be included in a school yard habitat/outdoor classroom program. 
Target Audience:
Resource managers, Partners for Fish and Wildlife personnel, visitor service professionals, educators, outdoor recreation planners, landscape architects, law enforcement officers, or anyone whose resource management efforts would be enhanced or supported by education initiatives. (This course does not presume that education is your primary field of responsibility, although it may be.)
