Creating a vegetation cover map can be a daunting task that spans over years. This 5-day course examines vegetation mapping options and provides a framework on how to proceed with your project. Topics include project planning, National Vegetation Classification Standards (NVCS), mapping land cover using ArcGIS software and GPS techniques, accuracy assessment, sampling strategies, managing data and deliverables, and writing contracts. Mapping case studies will be discussed and time will be set aside for one-on-one consultation. The instructor cadre will consist of field experts from The National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, West Virginia National Heritage Program and private consultants. Target Audience: Anyone responsible for developing a vegetation cover map for your refuge, park or conservation area.
