TEC7132 - GPS Introduction for Natural Resource Field Personnel

Global positioning systems (GPS) are used by field biologists to plot the locations of sites and navigate to point-specific locations. This course covers the use of GPS receivers commonly used in natural resource agencies. The course includes instruction on coordinate and projection systems, hands-on exercises for real-time field mapping and field data collection, navigation techniques, and data importation to a desktop computer for use in natural resource maps.
College Credit 1 semester hour
Who Should Attend: Field biologists, realty specialists, and other natural resource field professionals interested in using GPS to collect, record, mark, or find field data and locations.
Objectives:
* Describe GPS technology and the NAVSTAR satellite system used by GPS devices;
* Describe how the selection of coordinate and projection systems affects the collection and analysis of data;
* Accurately record field data locations in various habitats;
* Calculate the area of habitat types;
* Use GPS devices to navigate to a specific location within 2 meters; and
* Import data into GIS software for analysis and display.
