Participants
learn the FWS role in oil and chemical spills affecting FWS trust resources. Procedures
are described for marine and fresh water environments. Emphasis is placed
on planning for an emergency response, sample collection and handling,
and on coordinating the FWS response within the Incident Command System. Topics
covered include development of Area Contingency Plans, accessing the
Oil Pollution Liability Trust Fund, health and safety requirements for
spill response, wildlife rescue operations and damage assessment. Participants
with current HAZWOPER certification can obtain their required OSHA eight-hour
refresher training for hazardous waste workers during this course.
College
Credit: 2 semester hours
Who Should
Attend: Natural resource personnel whose responsibilities include
planning or participating in a spill response.
Length: 5 days/36

Objectives: By the end of this session, the participant will be able to:
- Describe
the major types of oil products typically involved in spill events;
- Describe
spill response and cleanup techniques;
- Learn OSHA
training and safety requirements for spill response workers;
- Describe
the role of the FWS in a multi‑agency spill response; and
- Describe
spill-response reporting and accounting procedures required by the FWS
and the Department of the Interior.
