"Climate Change Models: Preparing for a Century of Change"

Wednesday, July 29, 2009
2:30 to 4:00PM EDT

The Earth’s climate has entered a period of rapid, human-induced change that will last at least the remainder of this century, and most likely much longer.  The changes will be significantly larger than the Earth has seen in thousands of years, and will stress all of its biological heritage. I will discuss what we know about the coming change, including the expected average temperature rise over continents of about 1° F for every decade for the foreseeable future.  The United States is likely to see much drier summers everywhere and wetter winters over the northern half.  It is likely that there will be strong variability, with periods of unprecedented drought over the contiguous U.S. starting in the next 15 years. Mitigation actions could decrease the worst of the long term consequences.
