Vernon Bailey

  • Vernon Bailey was one of C. Hart Merriam’s original field biologists, joining him in 1887. Bailey, a mammalologist married Merriam’s ornithologist sister, Florence, and together they traveled throughout the west conducting wildlife surveys. He was a skilled and dedicated field naturalist.

Bailey worked on predator control throughout his career, and had a significant role in the elimination of wolves from the Southwest. Despite these actions, his studies of the Mexican wolf and other species in the Southwest are unsurpassed, as Bailey did this work during a time when the wolves roamed freely in their original habitat.

Bailey wrote several books including Wild Animals of Glacier, and Animal Life of Yellowstone.
