Jack Watson

  • In 1957 the National Key Deer Refuge on Big Pine Key, Florida was established, thanks to what was essentially a one-man effort by Jack Watson, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service refuge manager in the Keys.

His was a labor of love, and he worked out of his dining room without a secretary until 1973. It was that year that he was chosen Conservationist of the Year by the National Wildlife Federation.
