Course TitleEarth to Sky VI: Communicating Climate Change
Disregard 'Number of Open Seats'. All students enrolling in this course will be placed on the 'waitlist'. Selections will be made based on the responses on the 'Supplemental Application'. All students will be notified of their enrollment status 10 weeks prior to the start of class.

When treasured landscapes change, visitors ask, “Why?” When the answer includes climate change, educators, interpreters and others face many communication challenges. To help meet this challenge, Earth to Sky VI will draw upon the expertise of NASA, FWS, NPS and others to present accurate, up-to-date science and effective communication techniques; NASA scientists will present on global climate change basics and illustrate their latest findings; and Earth to Sky alumni will show how to incorporate NASA content into interpretive/educational products in the field. The course will be conducted in a workshop format fostering collaboration between participants and presenting scientists, educators, interpreters, and course alumni. Interactive science and communication sessions will be interspersed with time for developing plans for using course content at the participant’s work site. Pre- and post- course distance learning events and a site visit to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center are planned. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
• Explain the basics of climate science—including the roles of Earth’s oceans, atmosphere, ice, carbon cycle and energy budget;
• Describe at least one effect a warming climate has on ecosystems and species distribution, migration, and survival;
• Describe at least one way scientists use models to Earth’s explore climate and indicate future trends;
• Incorporate relevant NASA climate science and/or educational and visual resources into on-site interpretive and educational products and programs;
• Describe effective communication techniques and methods for use with complex and controversial subject matter;
• Communicate known causes and effects of accelerated climate change, and the implications, to multiple and diverse audiences;
• Facilitate the sharing and exchange of information and personal understanding about climate change with others;
• Call upon the expertise and resources of the entire Earth to Sky community for future efforts;
• Share the basics of climate science and effective climate communication techniques/methodology with peers..

Target Audience:
Experienced interpretive staff, education specialists, public affairs officers, and other federal/local agency stakeholders. Only 25 applicants will be accepted; preference will be given to FWS and NPS employees and based on responses to the questions on the Supplemental Application. Please see the link in the course description for the Supplemental Application. Supervisory approval is required.

TUITION FEES: The Cost To Learner displayed in the Course Details is an approximate amount. Please refer to the 'Class Cost to Learner' displayed in the Class Details for the specific class session you wish to attend. NCTC Standard Tuition fees are scheduled to change beginning October 1, 2012. Additional information is available at the NCTC website.
