Course TitleAcoustic Monitoring of Bats for Regulatory Compliance

This course will cover the basics of monitoring wild bat populations using acoustic detection of echolocation. Hands-on field and laboratory exercises will be provided regarding equipment set-up and calibration, field data collection, species identification, and data analysis, reporting, and storage. Additional discussions will be included on the interpretation of acoustical monitoring data received for federal and/or state regulatory review and the application of acoustics in bat conservation.


Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of sampling bats using acoustic monitoring
  • Follow the forthcoming 2018 Range-wide Indiana Bat Summer Survey Guidelines for estimating presence/absence of bats using acoustic techniques
  • Properly set up and utilize bat detectors to maximize detectability
  • Process and analyze acoustic data using hand review and computer software
  • Critically evaluate bat acoustic surveys and reports for scientific integrity and compliance 


Natural resource professionals monitoring wild bat populations or interpreting acoustic monitoring data coming in from the field.
